Mount Stavo as a drive

Open your Drive in File Explorer, Finder, your Linux file manager, phone file apps and backup tools, like any network drive. Files you add show up on the web and in the apps right away.

Your server speaks WebDAV, the standard every system and many apps understand. Everything you need is in Settings > Connect a drive on your server: your address, app passwords and these steps.

Before you start

  • Your address is https://drive.example.com/dav/files/your-username/. Each space you're in has its own: https://drive.example.com/dav/spaces/Space name/.
  • Sign in with an app password, not your account password. Make one per device in Settings > Connect a drive. It's shown once; if you lose it, make a new one and remove the old one. Removing one signs that device out right away, and two-step sign-in doesn't get in the way.
  • Use https. Drives send the password with every request, so the drive only answers over https, or over plain http on your own network.

Windows

  1. Open File Explorer, right-click This PC and choose Map network drive.
  2. Pick a letter and paste your address as the Folder. Turn on Reconnect at sign-in and Connect using different credentials.
  3. Sign in with your username and an app password.

Windows only downloads files up to 50 MB from network drives until you raise the limit. To allow files up to 4 GB, run this in an admin Command Prompt and restart:

shell
reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters /v FileSizeLimitInBytes /t REG_DWORD /d 4294967295 /f

Windows also sends passwords only over https. If your server is on plain http on your own network, allow it with this (admin Command Prompt, then restart):

shell
reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters /v BasicAuthLevel /t REG_DWORD /d 2 /f

If Windows says the folder isn't valid, check that the WebClient service is running (services.msc) and that the address ends with a slash.

Mac

  1. In Finder, choose Go > Connect to Server.
  2. Paste your address and click Connect.
  3. Choose Registered User, enter your username and an app password, and keep it in your keychain.

macOS writes little ._ files and .DS_Store next to everything. With Hide helper files on (the default), they stay out of your Drive: the server keeps them for a few hours for your Mac and nobody else sees them. The same goes for Windows' Thumbs.db and desktop.ini and Office's lock files.

Linux

In GNOME Files, click Other Locations and connect to davs://drive.example.com/dav/files/your-username/. In KDE Dolphin, use webdavs:// instead. To mount it with davfs2:

shell
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/stavo
sudo mount -t davfs https://drive.example.com/dav/files/your-username/ /mnt/stavo

For a mount at startup, put the address, your username and the app password on one line in /etc/davfs2/secrets, and add the mount to /etc/fstab with davfs _netdev,user.

rclone

Good for backups, syncing and scripts:

shell
rclone config create stavo webdav url=https://drive.example.com/dav/files/your-username/ \
  vendor=other user=your-username pass=YOUR-APP-PASSWORD --obscure

rclone copy ~/Pictures stavo:Pictures --progress
rclone mount stavo: ~/Stavo --vfs-cache-mode writes

rclone also takes an API token instead of a password: set bearer_token and leave the user and password empty.

Android, iPhone and iPad

  • Android: Solid Explorer, CX File Explorer and Material Files all add WebDAV drives. Use your address, port 443 and https. Photo backup apps that speak WebDAV (PhotoSync, FolderSync) use it too.
  • iPhone and iPad: the Files app can't add WebDAV drives on its own. Apps like Documents by Readdle, FE File Explorer or Owlfiles can, and show it in Files. The Stavo app already puts your Drive in Files.
  • Cyberduck and Mountain Duck: open a WebDAV (HTTPS) connection to your server with the path /dav/files/your-username/.

How the drive behaves

  • Deleting moves things to the Trash, like on the web. Your profile photo can't be deleted from a drive.
  • Saving over a file keeps the old version in its history, also when an app saves to a temporary file and renames it over the original.
  • New files are processed like any upload: thumbnails, Photos, text in images and search.
  • Password-locked files show as name.stavolocked: the encrypted file, read-only. Unlock them on the web.
  • Spaces are separate drives. If you can only view a space, its drive is read-only.
  • Two files with the same name in one folder (the web allows it, drives don't) show as name (id).ext. Names ignore case, like on Windows and macOS.
  • Hidden folders stay hidden unless you turn on Show hidden folders; their addresses keep working.
  • Storage limits apply, and your free space shows in Explorer and Finder.

Behind Cloudflare Tunnel

Cloudflare refuses uploads over 100 MB in one request, and drives send each file in one request. Downloads of any size work. For bigger uploads, use the web or the apps (they upload in pieces), or connect on your own network. Settings > Connect a drive tells you when your server is behind Cloudflare.

For admins

The drive is the Network drive (WebDAV) switch in Admin > Features, and it can be limited to selected people. Files are limited to the server's upload size (MAX_UPLOAD_MB, 2 GB by default).
