FAQ

Fair questions.

The basics

Do you host my files?

No. Stavo runs on your hardware: a NAS, a Raspberry Pi, an old Mac mini or a VPS you rent. Your files, photos and docs never touch our servers. This site only handles accounts, license keys, extension downloads and update checks.

Is it free?

Yes. The server and the web app are free forever: every feature, as many people as you like, no trial and no storage caps. Passwords is free everywhere, apps included. You only pay for the native Drive and Photos apps. Never a subscription.

What do I pay for, then?

The native apps for Drive and Photos: Stavo for Mac and Stavo for iPhone and iPad, with photo backup, sync and capture. They're coming soon. When they ship it's one payment (from $19) for just you or for everyone on your server, and every 1.x update is included.

Are Passwords free?

Yes, always. Your passwords are never behind a paywall. The web app, the browser extension and AutoFill on iPhone, iPad and Mac are free for everyone on your server, forever. No license and no trial.

Is it a subscription?

No, and it never will be. You pay once. Nothing renews, and your server keeps running even if we disappear.

What do I need to run it?

Docker and somewhere to keep files. A Synology, Unraid or TrueNAS box, a Raspberry Pi, an old Mac mini, a small VPS. If it runs docker compose, it runs Stavo.

Can I move to another server later?

Yes. Sign in to your old server from the new one and it pulls everything over: files, photos, notes, docs, the Vault and your links. Or download it all in open formats (DOCX, XLSX, Markdown, CSV, original photos) and take it anywhere.

Why Stavo

Why Stavo instead of a hosted cloud?

Because your files, photos, notes, passwords, mail, calendar and contacts can live on hardware you own, on your own domain, for free. Nobody scans them, nobody raises the price, and nobody can switch them off. Your family and friends get their own space on your server.

Will it run a lot of things I never use?

No. Drive is the core and always on. Everything else is your choice: turn off Photos or Notes, and add extensions like Passwords or Mail only when you want them. What's off is gone from the menus and stops running.

Who makes Stavo, and why?

One developer at NullDaily, who uses Stavo every day as his main app. Every feature was made for him, for his friends and family, or because someone using Stavo asked for it. He depends on it too, so it gets fixed and kept up.

Will Stavo still be around in a few years?

It's supported for as long as its maker can, and he runs his own life on it. If it's ever abandoned, the source pledge kicks in: the source code is released as open source. And your server never needs us to run, so nothing you have stops working.

Is Stavo open source?

Not today. But there's a public promise: if Stavo is ever abandoned, its source code is released under an open source license: the server, the web app, the official extensions and the apps. Abandoned means no new Stavo release for 12 months, and no announced plan for what comes next. It may also open up sooner, whenever we decide to.

What if the marketplace goes away?

Your extensions keep working. Sideloading is part of Stavo, so you can always install an extension from a file without the marketplace. The marketplace is a convenience, never a gate.

Why are the apps paid when everything else is free?

Native apps cost real money to ship: developer program fees, certificates, code signing and distribution. The app license covers that, once, never a subscription. The server, the web app, every official extension and Passwords everywhere stay free.

Can I use Stavo for my business?

Stavo is free for personal, family and community use: you, your household, your friends, your club. If you sell hosting as a business, it's fair to pay for the tool you earn with, so that gets its own product, coming from NullDaily.

Who owns my data?

You do. It lives on your hardware and never touches our servers. Export everything in open formats any time, or move to another Stavo server in one go.

Why Stavo is built this way

Licenses

Which license do I need?

Running a server for your family? Family (up to 6 people). For a bigger group, Community (up to 25). On someone else's server? Personal is yours and works on any server. Planned prices, once the apps ship: Personal $19, Family $39, Community $79.

Do the people on my server need an account here?

No. You buy one Family or Community license and paste the key into your server. Everyone on your server gets the apps. They never visit this site.

Do my friends need to buy anything?

No. A Family license covers up to 6 people on your server, Community up to 25, on all their devices. They install the apps and connect to your server.

I'm on someone else's server. Can I buy just for me?

Yes, that's Personal. It belongs to you, works on any Stavo server you use, and moves with you if you switch.

Can I upgrade later?

Yes. Upgrading from Personal or Family to a bigger plan costs the difference, and you keep the same key, so there is nothing to change on your server. Do it from your account page.

What happens after the app trial?

Every device gets 30 days of everything. After that, without a license, the apps go read-only: you can still browse, open and download. The web app stays fully free, so you can always do anything in the browser. Nothing is ever deleted.

What does "Stavo 1" mean?

It's what you buy. A Stavo 1 license gets every 1.x update, for good. Features people ask for ship in 1.x, not held back for a paid Stavo 2. If a Stavo 2 ever happens, upgrading is optional and discounted, and 1.x keeps working forever.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If the apps don't work out for you, email [email protected] and we'll sort out a refund. A refund turns the key off.

Features

Which AI does the Assistant use?

The one you pick. Claude is recommended, and OpenAI, Google Gemini, Ollama (fully local) and any OpenAI-compatible server work too. You add your own API key on your server, so you pay your provider directly and we never see it.

Can Claude Desktop or Claude Code use my files?

Yes. Your server includes an MCP server. Connect Claude Desktop, Claude Code or claude.ai to it and Claude works with your files using your own permissions. The Vault is never shared.

What if I forget my Vault passphrase?

Use the recovery file you saved at setup. Lose both and the Vault is gone for good. Nobody can open it, not us and not your server. That is the point, so keep the file somewhere safe.

Will my old screenshot links keep working?

Yes. When you import from CleanShot Cloud, the importer keeps the original IDs, and an old domain like share.example.com redirects to your new one.

When are the Mac and iPhone apps out?

They're coming soon. Leave your email on the pricing or download page and we'll send one note when they ship. The server and the web app are ready now and don't need them.

Is there a Windows app?

Not yet. On Windows the full web app works in any browser, and ShareX can upload straight to your server.

Can I use ShareX?

Yes, and it's free: no app license needed. Add it under Settings > Uploaders on your server and double click the file it gives you. Flameshot, Spectacle, the Mac screenshot tool, iPhone Shortcuts and anything that speaks HTTP work the same way.

Extensions

What are extensions?

Optional parts you switch on in Admin > Extensions: Passwords, Mail, themes, file viewers, integrations and more. Drive is the core, and Photos and Notes are built in. Everything else is an extension, so your server only runs what you use.

Do extensions cost extra?

The ones we make are free, like the server. Other authors can publish free or paid extensions in the marketplace. Paid ones come from verified authors and are paid once, never a subscription. NullDaily keeps 10% of each sale to run the marketplace.

Are extensions from other people safe?

Every upload is scanned and checked, a new author's first releases are reviewed by the NullDaily team, and each extension asks for the permissions it needs before it runs. Still, install with care and keep backups, like with any software.
