Licensing and your server
The server is free. A license only unlocks the native apps, and it lives in your server, not in each app.
The short version
- Your server is free. Every feature in the browser works for everyone on it, with or without a key.
- Keys go on sale here when the apps ship (coming soon) and show up in your account.
- You paste the key into your server. Family and Community keys go in Dashboard → Instance → Apps license. A Personal key goes in Profile → Your Stavo apps on whatever server that person uses.
- Your server checks the key with this site now and then, and tells the apps they're unlocked.
- People on your server don't need an account here. They install the apps, connect to your server and they're covered.
Which key goes where

Seats
A seat is a person who used one of the apps in the last 30 days. Using the web app never takes a seat. If more people use the apps than the license covers, nobody gets cut off: the newest extra people show as unlicensed, and you see something like "7 of 6 seats in use" with a way to upgrade. You can pick who gets the seats in Instance → Seats. People with their own Personal key don't count.
What your server sends us
To check a key, your server sends the key, your server's address and, for Personal keys, a random looking id for the person (a hash, not a name or email). That's it. No files, no file names, no list of people. Answers are cached for hours, and if this site is unreachable your server keeps the last good answer, so a hiccup here never locks anyone out.
Every server that checked your key shows up on your account page.
Personal keys and moving
A Personal key belongs to you. The first server you use it on claims it; when you move to another server it moves with you, at most once a week. Stuck? Email us and we'll reset it.
Upgrades and Stavo 2
Outgrew your plan? Upgrade from your account page and pay the difference. The key stays the same, so there's nothing to change on your server. Every Stavo 1 key gets all 1.x updates. If there's ever a Stavo 2, upgrading is optional and discounted, and 1.x keeps working forever.
After the trial, without a key
Each device gets 30 days of everything. After that the apps go read-only (browse, open, download) until there's a license. Your files are never touched, and the web app keeps working in full.
